Burning on Private Lands in the Duluth Area and North Shore - Event Re-Cap

On August 19, 2026, Abby Andrus of Dovetail Partners and Julie Allen of Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association hosted an informational session at the Duluth Township Town Hall about how private landowners and community members can use intentional fire as tool for forest health, food production, and wildfire resilience. The meeting generated productive dialogue and included perspectives from the local volunteer fire department, a representative from the DNR who issues burn permits, forest dwellers concerned about the build up of hazardous fuels, agriculturalists using holistic management strategies, historical perspectives on our northern Minnesota forest, and much more. Many participants expressed interest in future burn pile and biochar training opportunities, with a future hope to form a prescribed burn association. A prescribed burn association (PBA) is a grassroots model for pile burning and broadcast burning on private lands.
